Phish has played this standard on three occasions, all three in bluegrass settings with guests. Its debut was on 5/6/93 in Albany, NY. Dick Solberg and Jeff Walton had joined the band for the final three songs of the first set (Solberg on fiddle, Walton on acoustic guitar); “Tennessee Waltz” was played between “Why You Been Gone So Long” and “I Been on a Fast Train to Georgia,” the only appearance of those two songs. The second time “Tennessee Waltz” was played was 11/16/94 with “Reverend” Jeff Mosier on banjo and vocals. It was played as part of a string of bluegrass songs to close the first set. Three nights later, after their show in Bloomington, Indiana, Phish performed “Tennessee Waltz” in their parking lot set, an acoustic bluegrass set that featured the Reverend on banjo, Eric Merrill on fiddle and guitar, Abe Stevens on jaw harp, and “Jeremy” on banjo.
